“Don’t be so hard on yourself. Think from your heart and your head will follow. If you feel positive about your goal and it makes you feel like you’re accomplishing something, than do it.”  -Liz Birch

Liz Birch is a woman whose life’s work evolved from personal experience. “My parents were both ill and needed extra care. My father had Parkinson’s disease and my mother had congestive heart failure, arthritis and dementia. I have eight brothers and sisters, so as a family we decided it would be best if we moved my parents into a house on the block where I live.”

Though Liz was married and raising three children, as well as working full time as a purchaser for an orthopedic group, she assumed with the help of her family and some hired caregivers she’d be able to handle the added responsibility.

What Liz found was that the caregivers the agencies were sending were not up to her standards. “Sometimes I’d stop by after work and my parents would say the caregiver hadn’t even spoken to them all day. Other times I’d come by and the caregiver would be asleep on a bed. It was so frustrating to find good helpers that really cared. I mean, these were my parents. I loved them so much and needed to know they were being cared for by someone whose heart was in the job.”

Two events were the catalysts that helped Liz find her life’s path. One day she walked into her parent’s house and smelled dinner cooking. Her parents were contently watching television; the beds were made and the laundry was caught up. “There was a new caregiver there named Mary Lou, and she was exactly what I was looking for; her heart was in her job.”

Liz and Mary Lou had extensive conversations regarding in home caregivers. “Mary Lou told me that there were plenty of excellent caregivers out there, they just needed an agency that took the time to find them. She kept encouraging me to start my own business.”

As fate would have it, Liz’s employers were restructuring and she chose a settlement package. Instead of rushing out to find another job, she decided to do some soul searching and think about what Mary Lou had said.

“I sat down and wrote all the things I loved about Mary Lou as a caregiver, and an additional list of qualifications I’d expect from someone I hired.  After careful thought, I decided my heart was really in this and I would launch my own business.”

Home Care Angels, Inc. opened its doors in August of 2004 and Liz has never looked back.

“Since I launched the business, this is the happiest I’ve ever been in my life. As a person who’s been there, I know how important it is to see that the people caring for your loved ones are doing it because it’s their passion, not just a job”.

Before hiring caregivers, Home Care Angels requires three references from former clients and has an extensive screening process.

“It’s our mission to see that everyone who needs a caregiver for their loved one can rest assured that our caregivers are not only experienced professionals, but give that added TLC that makes all the difference.”
